Synopsis:

Destello Bravío is a mysterious, dark and suggestive story; far removed from traditional narrative approaches. It is a fictional work that draws from the documentary and codes of suspense, with notes of magical realism and surrealism. It deconstructs film genres, breaks away from the traditional tale and peeks into different everyday lives to describe a state of mind: the sentiment of inhabitants in a place in process of depopulation, focusing on its women. The film also broaches the search for beauty and the longing for childhood. In the background, and as the main cause of evil, the patriarchal system and the arrival of globalisation.

Notes from the programmer:

Insanely realistic all the way to shocking levels. How is rural life in Spain like? Rural life never looked so quirky, incongruous and crazy routinely. Do not expect anything to happen in this film, just let it take you and enjoy the ride. While the promise for a mighty flash to come and

The Mighty Flash is a documentary where the most overwhelming loneliness is placed in front of the protection of its people. The heat of the countryside against the cold of the early morning. The lust of women against the chastity of the religious rite. The undaunted look in front of the most emotional look of the characters, with eyes that shine but at the same time say nothing. This is the duality that Ainhoa Rodríguez displays in her debut feature, Destello bravío (The Mighty Flash).

A strong symbolic load weighs on the entire work, from religious elements to a scorching moon in the darkness of the night. Federico García Lorca is present in its symbolism, from the Earth’s satellite to the musicality of the Anda jaleo. Antonio Machado is perceived in the passage of time, because life passes and everything remains the same. A constant agony suffered by its protagonists, who can only cling to the purest traditions of a lost place: religion and its rituals. This symbolism is supported by staging and photography at the service of the narrative. An image that presents the two sides of the coin in a single plane, with an enviable symmetry at the height of Kubrick. Fixed shots show the story in a theatrical way, everything happens before a lens that is still.

It is a sensory film, to close your eyes and enjoy the sound that starts from the absolute silence of solitude, to the noise of partying, to the bellowing of a goat in the middle of the night or to the empty footsteps in the dark. It is sensory to the point of feeling the caresses of women who touch themselves because they know that no one else will. The heat and passion of the ladies is felt in one of the most memorable scenes of the film that opens with the song “Go on, fuss, fuss and now the shooting/dancing begins.” Again the duality of the maximum tragedy of a shooting to the genuine enjoyment of the dance. They are women trapped at a table, reminiscent of the characters in Buñuel’s The Exterminating Angel irrationally clinging to a room.

Don’t wait for something to happen in the movie and worry about feeling it. To perceive the brave flash as if the purest smell of melancholy sprouted from our own skin. The melancholy of a people destined to disappear and be forgotten.
