We live in a time when confidence in democracy is diminishing. This situation is not new. In the past war or conflict have left communities with the need to reflect on ways to live with multilingualism, cohabitation and migration. If anything, this time it has spread further, mostly thanks to a bigger system that really rules the world, Capitalism and the impact its self-destruction has in key areas like the environment and social equality.
As European Capital of Culture (ECoC) 2016 the city of Donostia/San Sebastián, in the Basque country, engaged in numerous activities with a primary focus on culture and dialogue as the roads towards improved coexistence. Europa Transit was a travelling “embassy” of the ECoC. And produced ten documentary films, shot in ten European cities that are or have been witness to wars or conflict: Ceuta (Spain), Sarajevo (Bosnia Herzegovina), Pristina (Kosovo), Belfast (Northern Ireland), Paphos (Cyprus), Plovdiv (Bulgaria), Thessaloniki (Greece), Moscow (Russia), Wroclaw (Poland) and Dresden (Germany).
In particular the themes of Multiculturalism and migration were focused in recognising that all of Europe, not one particular region, are facing the challenges of migration and multiculturalism.
The films were focused on the aspects related to migration, such as human rights, roles of women, and coexistence with several religious identities often being found in one place. Activities here included those that again promoted the benefits of new communities living in Europe and how places with high numbers of migrants can learn from cities such as San Sebastián where communities with sometimes very different beliefs live together in the same neighborhood.
The work acted as a spotlight to share how people overcome conflicts and find mutual understanding with people who have lived through a similar history. The project also included a “pan-European Mashup” which presented stories, pictures and videos from the locals of the places visited on topics such as discrimination, injustice, solidarity, dignity and fear.
CinemaAttic is delighted to bring 3 of these films to be introduced by their protagonist, a poet, a musician and a group of performers.
