The House Special. Our Opening Night puts together a selection of internationally awarded Catalan short-films preceded by traditional Castellers (Human Towers) and followed by a Catalan Gastronomic Dinner courtesy by the Centre Català d’Escòcia to round up an unmissable festival opening night.

As usual, the Short Film Night is always one of the big nights of the festival as it becomes an open joyful celebration for all. You should expect:

– A superb hand-picked programme of Short Films

– Castellers! Human Towers! with the Colla Castellera d’Edinburgh

– Catalan Gastronomy Dinner. A selection of Catalan tapas thanks to Centre Català d’Escòcia

CATALAN GASTRONOMY 

Your ticket will include a complimentary Catalan themed dinner.

In collaboration with Scotland’s Catalan Centre we present a themed party including a selection of finest catalan tapas.

Scotland’s Catalan Centre aims to promote the Catalan culture and language in Scotland and to become a bridge between the two nations and cultures. With this in mind, they regularly organise Catalan Language Lessons for adults in Edinburgh; talks on literature, art or history. They also celebrate the Catalan festivals of Sant Jordi, Castanyada, Diada and Cagatio.

CASTELLERS (HUMAN TOWERS)

Castells –a Catalonian word that means castles– are a cultural phenomenon particular to Catalonia and consist of erecting human towers. This tradition originated at the end of the 18th century in Valls, Tarragona, when rival groups of people called colles, began to compete in constructing the different kinds of human towers that we recognise nowadays.

Edinburgh has a local group that gather on weekly basis to celebrate this tradition and they are joining us to demonstrate how to build a castell. Be ready to volunteer and be part of the human tower! Visit their Facebook page.

Fear and fascination arise in Muriel Grey when she remembers the figure of her father, who passed away when she was still very young. Thirty years after his death, Muriel will tell us the story of José Carlos Grey a survivor of the Mauthausen concentration camp. José Carlos Grey, a Spaniard who was a black Republican fighter. During World War II he was imprisoned by Nazis in the Mauthausen concentration camp. Having a different skin colour, he was treated worse than other inmates. Many years later his daughter tries to revive his memories through archive materials and beautiful re-enacted scenes.

Suc de Síndria is one of the most anticipated short films of the year. Love and its unique healing power. When we look at the effects of sexual abuse is mostly from the perspective of trauma, but how can love (and watermelon juice) help to overcome such an experience?
Barbara and Pol spend a few days on holiday with a group of friends in a house surrounded by nature. They want to have a good time and find a peaceful space where they can enjoy their intimacy. With the support of Pol, in the midst of nature, between tears and laughter, Barbara will heal old wounds and redefine her sexuality.
