Cinemaattic and ECA Animation present this special masterclass with two of Spain’s most prominent animators. Begoña Vicario and Izibene Oñederra. Multi award winning directors, their experience in collaborative projects will be the subject of this masterclass in Edinburgh College of Art.

Great Women Animators flourish in Basque Country, with artistic animation proposals that link animation with other contemporary arts. Animation can be one of the most inclusive art forms, Begoña Vicario and Izibene Oñederra are masters of bringing together oral tradition, visual arts, painting, collage, found footage and a wide range of animation techniques to create unique animated films.

In recent years they have specialised in collective animation projects, bringing together over twenty young artists from Basque Country. In their recent films the mould of traditional Basque oral culture (Bersolarismo) comes together with visual experimentation, being inspired by a bertso (poem) created specifically for this project-and sometimes rethinking classic Basque poems. All of the creators work collaboratively, sharing both work techniques and practices and experiences, thus enabling mutual learning.

Multi-awarded films like Areka or Beti Bezperako Koplak are the result of these collective animation projects. We will discuss artistic and logistic challenges as well as the benefits of making animation in groups sharing a radical palette of techniques and animation styles.

They are considered two of the greatest Women Animators not just in Spain, but internationally and their films have been shown in Annecy, Zagreb’a Animafest, Animac or San Sebastian Film Festival and their work is been part of retrospectives in leading arts centres such as MoMA or CCCB.

BIOs

Begoña VICARIO (1962, Venezuela) has a degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country in Audiovisual specialty and studied animation at the PIOT Studio in Moscow. Since 1988 she has taught animation at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of the Basque Country. She received the Goya Award for Best Animated Short Film for Ask for Me.

Izibene Oñederra (1979, Azkoitia) has a degree in Fine Arts from Bilbao University. She has made and produced a number of her own hand-drawn animation films and has also collaborated in other people’s animation projects, such as, for example, Isabel Herguera’s film Amar. Her films have been in top festivals like Annecy, Zagreb’a Animafest, Animac or San Sebastian Film Festival and her work is been part of retrospectives in leading arts centres such as MoMA or CCCB.
