Screening + Conversation

EL ROJO MÁS PURO / The Deepest Red

Dir. Yira Plaza O’Byrne | 73’ | Colombia | 2023

This screening of The Deepest Red, closing the workshop Thinking Cinema, Thinking Latin America organized by GLARN (Glasgow Latin American Research Network), will conclude with a provocative and illustrative conversation between Irene Piedrahita, researcher at the University of Antioquia, Colombia, and doctoral student at the University of Glasgow; Julieta Lobato, British Academy International Postdoctoral Fellow at the School of Law, University of Glasgow; and Charlotte Gleghorn, Senior Lecturer in Latin American Film Studies at the University of Edinburgh and expert in Latin American cinema.

About the film: Luis Plaza, a 70-year-old union leader, survived the extermination of his political party. After the last attack he suffered in 2014, Yira—his daughter and the film’s director—lives with him and discovers a man who fights alone and longs for his family. As she wonders whether it has been worth risking his life for political convictions, she comes to know the person behind the slogans.
