Pilar Palomero is the most talked-about director in Spanish cinema after winning the Biznaga de Plata at Málaga Film Festival with her first feature Las Niñas (Schoolgirls) also part of the festival. Well before media turned on her as one of the most exciting new voices on Spanish cinema we were admiring her contemplative, fixed shot family centered atmospheric films.

We are proud to present an exclusive programme of Pilar Palomero early short films, as well as short pieces and audiovisual exercises alongside an in-depth conversation on her creative process.
Born in Zaragoza (Spain). In 2013 Pilar began an MFA in filmmaking at Film Factory (Sarajevo) under the leadership of Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr. Before, she worked for several years as a screenwriter and film teacher. Her short films have been screened at festivals such as Warsaw International Film Festival, Sarajevo Film Festival, Doc Lisboa, St. Louis International Film Festival, Festival de Cine de Huesca, Festival de Málaga, or Busan International Short Film Festival, among others. She has been Berlinale Talents 2017 and Sarajevo Talents (Pack&Pitch) 2016 alumni. She just finished her first feature film Las Niñas, in competition at the Berlinale 2020, with Inicia Films and BTeam Pictures.

The filmmaker tells about the bond with her family’s home town in three stages. A complex relationship with the footage, a creative dissatisfaction that forces her to re-shoot and reconfigure the work until she achieves the film text that matches her wishes: the conjunction of multiple stages and emotions in a film that is simultaneously open to change and yet focused on itself.

Joana, a 7-year-old girl, lives in a small village near the Mediterranean coast where her family runs a small antique shop. The shop consists of a large warehouse where objects and curiosities are scattered everywhere, dusty and forgotten: furniture, paintings, photographs… It is a unique place and full of a strange beauty.
NOĆ (Night)

A mother and a daughter wait for someone who will never come back. The night arrives. Short film made on film factory (Sarajevo) responding to a workshop given by Hungarian director Bela Tarr.

AGENDA 1958 (CON ANOTACIONES DE 1960 Y 65) (With Notes From 1960 and 65)

A woman and her mother spend the Summer in their family’s little village. The woman finds her grandmother’s 1958 agenda and discovers some of her deepest and secret feelings. Along with her mother she tries to understand what happened to her grandmother, and what she has in common with her. A film about joy and sadness, but moreover, a film about a mother’s love and devotion.

We discuss filmmaking and memory with Pilar Palomero – the freshest, exciting new voice to shine out of the recent wave of catalan cinema – led mainly by women filmmakers. Alongside the Scottish premiere of Las Niñas, we are proud to dedicate a total retrospective to the early films of Pilar Palomero. Family, home, atmosphere, memories-these are all elements present in her short films that bloom all together in her Málaga Film Festival winning first feature.
