MUJERES: Women in Film

The most daring and colourful short films made by Spanish and Ibero-American women, MUJERES, is back! For this 2022 edition CinemaAttic gathers gazes from Colombian, Peruvian, Mexican, Portuguese, Cape Verdean, Basque and Spanish female and non-binary directors.

Family dramas, surrealist animations, anti-colonisation sisterhood stories, gorgeous observational documentaries and indigenous Amazonian cosmovision – we have it all. Get ready for another superb rollercoaster short film programme!

MUJERES, CinemaAttic’s special programme celebrating the most daring and colourful short films made by Spanish and Ibero American women is back. Bringing the most radical female filmmakers from Latin American landscapes since 2016, our MUJERES programme returns this year with raw, visceral, brutal films as well as incredibly beautiful and poetic films.

Sorority and intergenerational sisterhood is a core theme across the 2022 selection as we will see grandmas, mothers and daughters helping (and in some cases destroying) each other.

This year we have directors taking the piss of literally the whole universe and Western civilization, as well as directors showing the raw brutality in which humans interact with mother nature and fellow animals. On top of that, we abandon Western imagery to dive into the language of Peruvian Amazonia dreams and myths, or the memory of Cape Verdean migration diaspora.

In recent months we’ve showcased the work of directors pushing the boundaries of conventional genres, mixing pure body horror with 3D animation, documentary, mystery and personal drama. Sexuality, technology and humanistic spirit to go beyond binary sexuality.

Every year we seek out women pushing the boundaries and expanding the possibilities of filmmaking, films that explode like fireworks, blending genres, experimenting with the film form and making us feel disgusted and utterly enchanted on equal terms.

The idea of home and the house remains a crucial motif for the women we selected. Many of the directors use the house seeking to capture the tension between a prison and a shelter.

Over the years, the domestic space has been a jail for so many women depicted from the public sphere, yet the house has been guardian of secrets, sins, family portraits and the most beloved life memories. We have evil houses, removals and beautiful home stories too.

Family dramas, surrealist animations, anti-colonisation sisterhood stories, gorgeous observational documentaries and indigenous Amazonian cosmovision, we have it all. Get ready for another superb rollercoasting short film programme!

Anyone narrowing down the female gaze to a softer, more delicate, warmer view of the world would be proven wrong after watching all these films.

NHA MILA by Denise Fernandes

Synopsis: After 14 years away from her homeland, Salomé is forced to return to Cape Verde to see her dying brother. During her stopover at Lisbon airport, Águeda, a cleaning lady, recognises Salomé as “Mila”, her childhood friend. Águeda invites Salomé to leave the airport and spend the stopover at her home, with the women of her family. The neighbourhood transports her on a spiritual journey, whose destination unfurls a painful bond with her homeland.
