What is the cost of producing beauty? In Amor, mujeres y flores Marta Rodríguez explores this question by taking an unflinching look at the toxicity within the flower industry in Colombia, largely occupied by women workers, fuelled by western demand. Turning her camera to document the abhorrent working conditions, Rodríguez exposes the health and environmental ramifications the women are facing on a daily basis. Grounded in intimate testimony from the women, she charts their ongoing struggle and attempts to organise, with the depth of care and acuity, that characterises her work.

Throughout her extensive career Rodríguez has used the lens to portray Colombian reality, reflecting the misery and exploitation of the most underprivileged. By immersing herself in the lives of her subjects and adopting a compassionate approach, she weaves narratives that challenge conventional norms. Marta Rodríguez is considered a pioneer in documentary and ethnological cinema in Latin America and has cemented herself as a formidable force over her remarkable five-decade career.

Showing as part of CURSED FLOWERS AND SACRED LEAVES – The militant cinema of Marta Rodríguez this screening is presented by CinemaAttic in collaboration with Invisible Women.

This screening will be introduced by Camilla Baier from Invisible Women.
