Cabra Marcado para Morrer (Man Marked for Death, Twenty Years Later) – Glasgow (14th December)

In 1962 João Pedro Teixeira, leader of the peasant league in Sapé (Paraíba), was assassinated by order of large landowners. Filming for a movie about his life, produced by the UNE’s CPC and the Pernambuco popular culture movement, began in 1964, featuring a fictionalized reenactment of the political activism that led to his murder. Production involved peasants from the Galiléia plantation (Pernambuco) and João Pedro’s widow, Elizabeth Teixeira, but was halted by 1964’s military coup. Seventeen years later, in 1981, director Eduardo Coutinho resumes the project, seeking out Elizabeth and other participants from the interrupted film, such as the peasants who had been active in the leagues.

The screening will begin with an introduction from Glasgow University’s Dr Tatiana Heise, whose research explores how cinema shapes collective memories of political violence and resistance in Latin America.
