KIMUAK. KIMU – WHAT? A beautiful word, somehow suitable for the occasion, ‘kimuak’ stands for sprouting, blooming in Basque. We are all returning slowly to public life and public events, humans blossoming with smiles on their faces like buds waiting to open. So we thought: let’s celebrate this new awakening of our cultural life with a surrealistic, horrific, entertaining collection of films fresh out from the Basque Country.
Kimuak (the Basque word for “sprout, spring, germinate”) came into being two decades ago when they first created a talent programme to support Basque short films made in the Basque Country. Following the example of France and New Zealand, the Basques became pioneers in championing short films sicne 1998. CinemaAttic has proudly teamed up with the Kimuak program, Etxepare Basque Institute and Basque Filmoteca since 2010, bringing the best proposals of Basque filmmakers in short film format to Scotland – and we’re proud to do it once again in 2021!
WHAT TO EXPECT? We recover the most rollercoasting side of our programmers, with films that go from Basque folkloric horror to surreal comedy (plenty of comedy). You’ll find masters of Spanish horror like Paul Urkijo (Errementari, The Blacksmith and the Devil), animation legends like Bego Vicario, Basque favourites like Koldo Almandoz (The Deer) and promising young talent fresh from the newly established San Sebastián Elias Querejeta film school (Marina Palacio).
We love to see the return of directors like Larry Mankuso delivering a tender documentary chasing memories in the streets of Havana, garnished with archive and contaminating ‘son cubano’ songs, and futuristic cosmic comedies from Pablo Hernando – one of Spain’s greatest post-comedy directors – and his entourage of usual collaborators: Julian Genisson, Carlos Vermut, Vito Sanz, Lorena Iglesias, Ingrid Garcia-Johnsson – predicting one certain thing in this era of uncertainty: the only hope is that in the future there will continue to be “churros”.
Multi-awarded films seen recently in festivals like Go Short Nijmegen, Sitges Festival, San Sebastián, CineMed, L’Alternativa, Bogoshorts or Zinebi
