El verdugo (The executioner) at Edinburgh Filmhouse

What would it be like to become an executioner as a consequence of approaching the person you love?

Execution by garrotte (brutal strangulation with an iron collar) was still on fashion in Spain in 1974…and the sole purpose of understanding the nature of the situation not just for the executioner -some had to be literally dragged to the scene for their reluctance to carry on with their ‘job’-, but obviously for the condemned is horrifying.

The approach to the subject of El verdugo (The executioner, 1963) by Luis García Berlanga (Valencia 1921- Madrid 2010) was dramatically different though. Not because the filmmaker does not apply the thick of it to the film but rather because he trasvested the drama by means of a sharp irony and the maestry of the camera-work of Pasolini and Sergio Leone’s cinematographer: the great Tonino Delli Colli.

The executioner was acclaimed and awarded at Venice Film Festival in 1964,it is nonetheless a prelude of modern Spanish cinema and considered by some as Berlanga’s masterpiece in the way the film defines the very concept of the boundaries of the human condition. The importance on the work of maestro script-writer Rafael Azcona and the performances of both Nino Manfredi and José Isbert is undeniable too.

The screening of El verdugo will take place
Thursday the 8th December
