SCAT Short Film Night puts together a selection of internationally awarded Catalan short-films followed by a Catalan Gastronomic Dinner courtesy by the Centre Catala d’Escocia and a Rumba Party.
As usual, the Short Film Night tends to be the big night of the festival as it becomes an open joyful celebration for all. You should expect:
– A great programme of Short-Films
– Castellers! Human Towers! with the Colla Castellera d’Edinburgh
– Catalan Gastronomy Dinner. A selection of Catalan tapas thanks to Centre Català d’Escòcia
– Rumba Party. DJ-set inspired in Sonar festival headliner Niño de Elche and the gypsy roots in Rumba catalana music
THE FILMS
A hand-crafted selection of the best Catalan short-films seen in the past year. From the ever cosmopolita Barcelona to the rural landscapes of Catalonia.
Catalonia is living a golden generation of women filmmakers (Carla Simon, Belen Funes, Clara Roquet, Meritxell Colell, Laura Ferrès and many more…) and this programme reflects both punk and realistic approaches that some of these great new directors are investigating with their films. Men are not sleeping either as we show the work of established authors like Ventura Durall and emerging talent like Joan Vives.
Galatée à l’infini – ISO LUENGO, JORGE MONEO QUINTANA, ANDREA BALLESTEROS I BEATO. Pygmalion, disappointed with the women of his time, decides to create an immaculate woman with his own hands. He models his creation in accord with his expectations and rank: she should be able to satisfy his pleasures and provide his kingdom with a workforce. A visual essay about the body as a socially constructed discourse through gynaecology, a science using an ideological scalpel to mould gender, sexuality and desire.
La Inútil – The Hopeless – Direction: Belen Funes. The right to simply not feel happy. Merche is too proud to explain how she feels. And the truth is that she feels bad, completely hopeless.
Primer estrat – First Stratum – Direction: Ventura Durall. Milos is about to start nursery school where he will spend the next two years. His father, filmmaker Ventura Durall, wonders how his personality will develop during that time and how much influence the experiences at nursery school will have on him. In order to find some answers to these questions, he decides to record the last two days of Milena, his older daughter, at nursery school.
The Beetle at the End of the Street – Direction: JOAN VIVES. Amadeo is a good person. He lives in a small village in Valencia, and since his wife died, he devotes himself to taking care of his father-in-law, Agustín, who is disabled. As a result, he doesn’t participate much in social life in the village. One day Lolín, the fishmonger’s daughter, has a premonition while decapitating an eel: Amadeo has only seven days to live. This fact will set in motion a series of events that will change his life completely.
Bohemia – Direction: ANNA PETRUS In the rural Catalonia of the 1920s, Fermí’s life changes with the arrival of Anna Mir, a painter who awakens in the adolescent a passion for art and painting, while he introduces Anna, to the only world he knows: that of vineyards and wine.
Cucarachas – Direction: Anna Solanas & Marc Riba A man, a woman, a building and a plague of cockroaches.
CATALAN GASTRONOMY
Your ticket will include a complimentary Catalan themed dinner.
In collaboration with Scotland’s Catalan Centre we present a themed party including a selection of finest catalan tapas and a special Rumba Catalana party.
Scotland’s Catalan Centre aims to promote the Catalan culture and language in Scotland and to become a bridge between the two nations and cultures. With this in mind, they regularly organise Catalan Language Lessons for adults in Edinburgh; talks on literature, art or history. They also celebrate the Catalan festivals of Sant Jordi, Castanyada, Diada and Cagatio and are also part of SCAT!
CASTELLERS (HUMAN TOWERS)
Castells –a Catalonian word that means castles– are a cultural phenomenon particular to Catalonia and consist of erecting human towers. This tradition originated at the end of the 18th century in Valls, Tarragona, when rival groups of people called colles, began to compete in constructing the different kinds of human towers that we recognise nowadays.
Edinburgh has a local group that gather on weekly basis to celebrate this tradition and they are joining us to demonstrate how to build a castell. Be ready to volunteer and be part of the human tower!
DIRECTORS ATTENDING
We will welcome directors Ventura Durall and Belen Funes to present their short-films in person, as they will attend the event and will give film masterclasses at Edinburgh College of Art earlier that week as part of SCAT Festival.

Scotland Catalan Film Festival. A festival organised by Cinemaattic. Catalan productions have once again topped film festivals around the world and it’s time to gather some of those in Glasgow. CCA Glasgow, GFT and University of Glasgow host a new edition of SCAT18. The festival is supported by Institut Ramon Llull and Estrella Damm.
