Two of the most relevant filmmakers from Basque Country will join us in this special night. The director of ‘Bertsolari’ and ‘Amama’ Asier Altuna and world-renowned Basque animator Isabel Herguera. BASQUE PIONEERS
Basques were the first in Spain to truly support short-film from the early days. A whole generation came out of the Kimuak label: Nacho Vigalondo, Daniel Sanchez Arevalo, Isabel Herguera, Borja Cobeaga, Asier Altuna, Jose Mari Goenaga or Jon Garaño amongst many others…
In this special night, we gather some of their most iconic short films. Oscar-nominated shorts, irreverent comedy, love stories…the usual first class roller coasting cinema cocktail by Spanish punks Cinemaattic.
THE BASQUE CASE
Back in the nineties using the experience of UniFrance and the New Zealand Film Commission the Basque Government decided to incorporate into their cultural agenda the production and distribution of short films as a core area of support and interest. As a result, the public agency Kimuak (‘Sprout’ in Basque) became the major driving force behind a whole new wave of Basque filmmakers.
Thanks to the ongoing collaboration between Edinburgh-based collective CinemaAttic and Kimuak, as well as Basque Film Archive and Etxepare Basque Institute – Scotland and Basque Country have been connected every year since 2011. Now, to mark the 20th Anniversary of Kimuak, a constellation of some of the most prominent Basque filmmakers are to visit Scotland.
This event is part of Cinemaattic’s retrospective KIMUAK: 20 YEARS OF BASQUE FILMS, celebrating twenty years since the Basque Government decided to include the production and distribution of short films as a core area of support and interest. As a result, the public agency Kimuak (‘Sprout’ in Basque) became the major driving force behind a whole new wave of Basque filmmakers.

In May, we pay a well deserved tribute to one of Europe’s longest standing distributors promoting short films: Basque Country’s ‘Kimuak’, asking, “How do you make small cinema from a small region in Europe visible world wide?”
The programme includes screenings of historic films and rare classics, alongside contemporary award winning films.
