ALBERTO VAZQUEZ MASTERCLASS AT ECA
The Creative Process. From Comic to Animation

Unique opportunity to get an insider perspective on the work of Alberto Vazquez, currently one of Europe’s hottest animators. After being nominated to European Film Awards for his first feature animated film “Psiconautas: The Forgotten Children” Cinemaattic collective dedicate a focus into his previous work, including a featured exhibition at Summerhall, a full retrospective on his artistic influences as part of this year’s Manipulate Festival and the Scottish premiere of Psiconautas.
In this masterclass at Edinburgh College of Art, Alberto will show the journey and creative process from the first comic strips to his first animation feature film.
With his distinctive artistic style and dark humour, Alberto’s work articulates an innovative approach to translating the visual techniques and devices from his original comics into animated film. Vazquez and his team share a passion for creating striking work for adult audiences which dares, both through narrative structures and stylistic choices, to consistently challenge filmmaking orthodoxy.
Alberto will show two of his short films as part of the masterclass. He will engage with the audience to keep an open discussion with attendees into specific issues of the animation development process.
ALBERTO VAZQUEZ BIO
Animation director, illustrator and cartoonist. His books and comics have been published in countries like Spain, France, Italy, Brazil and Korea and his illustrations have been published in magazines and newspapers around the world.
He has written and directed short animation as “Birdboy” , “Unicorn blood”or “Decorado”based in his comics. He just finished his first featured film “Psiconautas”, whose is director, scriptwriter, art director and based on the graphic novel of the same name by the own Vázquez.
His works have won three times the Goya Awards (best animation film and best animation short film twice) and He has won over 100 awards in international events such as the Festival of Annecy, Platino Awards, Chicago, Foyle, Silver Meliés or Expotoon. His works have been exhibited in prestigious festivals worldwide as Cannes, EFA Awards, Toronto, Annecy, Clermond-Ferrand, Animafest Zagreb or Slamdance
