Orphaned after her mother’s death of AIDS, six-y Orphaned after her mother’s death of AIDS, six-year-old Frida is sent from Barcelona to rural Catalonia to be raised by her aunt and uncle. There she must not only adjust to her new family but also come to terms with the uncertainties and stigma surrounding her parents’ illness. Drawing on her own experience of losing her parents to AIDS, writer-director Carla Simón turned her feature film debut into a deeply personal yet universal coming-of-age tale about bereavement and the loss of innocence. SUMMER 1993 won 3 Goyas, including Best New Director, and was also Spain’s submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. What CinemaAttic member Eugenie Theuer (@lajennycienta) has to say: “With the camera trained on the tour de force performance of Laia Artiga, you cannot help but be drawn into Frida’s maelstrom of wide-eyed wonder and angst, of being loved and feeling unloved. Simón’s autobiographical debut is a powerful reclaiming of voice - that of a member of a generation of AIDS-bereaved and orphaned children, who are often only considered as statistics.
